Chapter Eleven

I wouldn’t have been more surprised if she told me she’s the one who killed Emmett Pierce. “Why would you do that?”

“Sometimes I have to write about myself so people don’t get suspicious.”

“No way. How do you handle airing your own secrets like that?”

“I don’t have a choice. If I was the only one in town who never got called out in the column, it would be too easy to figure out I must be the one writing it.”

“Okay, I get that, but we’re the only two people here. Detective Bilson would never think Rumor Robin overheard us.”

“Maybe you’re right. But if I write about it, I could easily dispute it. Then he wouldn’t think there was any truth to it.”

Except there is. “Why don’t you want him to know you like him? Are you afraid he doesn’t feel the same way?”

“No. He’s Garrett. I always dreamed of growing up and meeting a stranger from somewhere far from here. He’d whisk me off my feet, and we’d live happily ever after. All that garbage.”

“Sounds romantic,” I say, my voice full of sarcasm.

“I could never end up with someone I’ve literally known all my life. It’s too weird.”

“Do you think that’s what happened with Lisa and Nate? Could she have grown tired of him because they’d been together for so long?”

“I could see that happening. Are you still thinking one of them killed Emmett?”

I shrug. “Could be. Nate says he didn’t go into the office, but he admitted to seeing Emmett go there. He even admitted to following Emmett. He seems like the perfect suspect.”

“Why do you think he was heading toward the gazebo but changed his mind and came back here?” Riley asks.

“I think he was going to meet Mia. She told us they were supposed to meet there, but he never showed.”

“Then the lollipop was definitely for Mia.”

“Unless he decided not to give it to her. Maybe he came back here to return it.”

“You don’t take returns.”

That’s true. “Hold on. Didn’t Shondra Taylor tell us that Emmett always had a new woman lined up before dumping the old one?”

Riley nods. “Yeah. Why?”

“Well, if he was going to break up with Mia, who was the new woman?”

Riley smirks. “I still think it’s possible he believed it would be you.”

“Ha, ha. That’s hysterical.”

“Hey, you never know. He did buy you a lollipop that morning.”

“I flat-out rejected him. Trust me. He didn’t think I was his next victim.” The thought gives me chills. I’d never date someone like Emmett Pierce. I don’t care how much money he had. I’d rather be poor for the rest of my life.

“Someone was. We need to find out who.”

“And why he came in through the back office.”

“Agreed. The back office only points in your direction again though, Hailey. No one else was here.”

“You were.”

“Emmett didn’t date the same woman twice. Nor would any woman ever go back to him.”

“Tell that to Lisa Carmichael.” I look at the cotton candy display I had to use as a shield to avoid getting hit by her.
